How To Eat Healthy While On The Go. A Guide to Day Trips, Road Trips or Short Getaways.
--
It’s been a while since I wrote last, my apologies. I was road tripping for a couple of weeks! But in preparing for my trip, I was reminded of how stressful traveling can be. Especially when you are trying to adhere to a healthy way of eating. Being away from your local grocery store, restaurants and other local health food stores can be reason enough to worry. During my trip, I was taking note of all the different tricks I was learning and relearning along the way so I could share them with you. So I’ve compiled my top 7 tips and tricks great tips to maintaining your healthy eating lifestyle while on the go. (It should be noted that my particular trip was done as safely as possible and all parties have maintained their health since and are past the 14 day mark.) Additionally, this article is great for day trips and shorter getaways since bigger trips aren’t encouraged yet. When we are able to travel freely again all of these tips can be applied as well.
- If you’re road tripping, invest in a cooler with ice packs and load your cooler full of your pre-made, home-cooked meals.
- Meal prep ahead of time, your meals in Tupperware in your cooler. If you are able to bring food with you, do this ahead of time so you always have a home-cooked meal with you.
- If you’re flying, call ahead of time or look online to see how much food you are allowed to bring on your flight and pack accordingly.
- Before booking your hotel, ask them a few questions about what local grocery stores and restaurants are nearby or if they have a restaurant in their hotel. Ask if they have a mini refrigerator in the room for your food. And if you need a gym, ask if they have a small gym that you can use (COVID permitting).
- If you’re eating out while on the road, research which restaurants will be close by. Try calling ahead to let them know that you will be ordering take-out or dining in with them and that you have questions about the menu. If you have dietary restrictions you’d like them to be aware of, mention that in your call as well. Coming from working in hospitality for over a decade, I can tell you that restaurants love when customers do this.
- Utilize what is nearby. For example, Starbucks. It’s everywhere. And at some Starbucks locations they have some great food options for breakfast like their pre-packaged falafel’s with vegetable sticks, or their quinoa salads. Grabbing one of those items with a banana and your morning coffee isn’t such a bad breakfast.
- Lastly, trust that your body will adjust. We sometimes don’t give our bodies enough credit for just how adaptable they are.
Doing a little bit of work/research before your trip will totally ease your travel worries.
